2 crowns on 3 posts

I have had implants for two molars and the periodontist placed 3 implants for those 2 molars. How common is that? Why not one for each tooth? Each implant was very expensive and am wondering if this is common practice? The crowns built on them were 2 crowns on 3 posts.

Three implants

Yes - three implants should be placed for two teeth in the molar region because of high biting forces of molars,to increase surface area ,in away increasing the longivity of implants.
