Affording Dental Implants

by Diane Caviness
(Hillsville, VA)

Affording Dental Implants - I am having a terrible time with dentures. I now have 4 upper mini-implants with the "snap-on denture, but for some reason my gums just won't take them.

I couldn't stand dentures with a palate because of dry mouth, it felt like I had a vacumn cleaner attached to my mouth. So I thought I would get rid of the palate and get rid of the problem. But the front of my gums, especially between the two front implants, feels like they are being rubbed raw.

My dentist has been so kind and patient and has adjusted, relined, and we've now even taken the housing out of the denture and put a soft reline in. I CAN'T STAND them! My life is a living hell; a nightmare I can't wake up from. The only other option I have is a fixed bridge and who knows if that will work or not. I've already spent around $9000 altogether, starting with the immediate dentures, the new pair that they said would fix all my problems, and then the mini implants.

I live in southwest VA and the going rate for an All on 4 fixed hybrid bridge is $20,000. I do not have that kind of money. I wish someone would start a charity for poor people with dental problems.

Affording Implants
by: Sharon B., RDH

Hi Diane,

I'm glad you mentioned what your dentist has already tried. The first option I was going to advise was having the dentures adjusted or relined. I'm very sorry that those attempts did not work for you.

Remember that it can take wearing new appliances 24/7 for a few weeks before your gums become completely comfortable with them. If you have not tried this already, tough it out a few weeks and see how your mouth reacts.

As far as affording all new, full mouth implants with permanent bridges, there is always the option of 3rd party financing. Many offices offer programes like CareCredit or take Credit Cards.

There is also the option of having your treatment completed at a dental school. The cost would be much less expensive, but may take up more of your time.

More about affording dental implants
by: Diane Caviness

Hi Sharon

Thank you for answering my question. I've had these "new" dentures for about a year and have had about 20 adjustments done to them. There is no way I could wear them 24/7 because they feel like they are rubbing my gums so raw they ought to be bleeding, even though to the dentist they look fine. My dentist is a saint.
As for financing, I know all about Care Credit, I'm still paying on some of the work I've already had done. I guess I'm just going to have to take out 2 or 3 credit cards and max them out. I wish there was a dental school close to me; I would beat feet there so fast it would make my head spin.

Denture discomfort
by: David Long CDT

Have your dentist try taking out the housing for the minis and have the lab process semi soft reline to condition your gums. It won't have as much retention as the housings but is much more comfortable.

Been There, Done That
by: Diane Caviness

Thanks David, but we've already done that. As a matter of fact that's what I'm wearing now and it was my idea. But the soft reline still settled too much in the front around the implants. It seems like whatever we try, it will feel fairly good in the office, but by the time I get home, or by the next day, my gums will settle opposite of the way they need to be. My dentist said he'd never seen anything like it; he can do a bite check one day and it will be perfect and the next day it will change. He has been so patient with me but I think he's baffled and is now trying anything that even remotely might help. But nothing does. I really appreciate any ideas though, because we're out of them.

Mini vs regular
by: Dr. Victor Sanz

Mini implants are to help with retention problems, especially when there is little bone to retain the denture. They provide less stability and support in comparison to a regular implant. If an upper jaw denture has suction, placing mini implants may not help much. It may eliminate the suction/seal that a denture typically has that functions as retention as air may get under the denture as the support moves onto the mini implants. Depending on the implant position, when placed towards the front of the mouth, may create a lever, hence the rocking of the denture. This in turn will rub the gums/bone and cause resorption still.

A short term solution may be to eliminate the sore contact area rubbing but will leave a space allowing food/air/fluid to fill the area. At the cost spent, a little more and you could have had a fixed prosthesis.

You are not alone
by: Anonymous

Diane, I too have had 5 sets of dentures in 5 years.
I've had 4 implants (Upper) and the last denture was to "snap in".......this too makes my mouth sore, wobbles left to right, is bulky and most of the time my mouth feels like someone is holding a lit candle in there. I am over spent and under satisfied. My next options is a reline (next week), but am seriously considering going to Richmond (Va) and trying to find a dentist who can help me. I have lost my social life to dentures and my depression is driving me insane. Please keep us posted on your progress as you are not on this journey alone.

Answer to "You are not alone"
by: Diane C

I was suprised to see a new comment on my one about affording dental implants. It's been a while since I posted it and I've finally gotten some help. I wanted to answer the newest post because you sound very much like I was. I live in southwest VA and after a LOT of research, decided to go to "Right Choice Dental Implant Center" located near Louisville, KY. It is about a 7 hour drive for me, but they charge about half of what the dentists close to me charge for 6 implants and a fixed bridge. Some people thought I was crazy, but they didn't live with my mouth.
This is a husband and wife team who only do implants and they do them at a reasonable price. They are very good and decent people. Maybe you could check them out. I am lucky to have a very supportive husband who takes me there. Good luck to you because I know what you're going through.

Hi This is Frank,
Sorry to hear that you suffer so much
Here's a little tip for you,it's really up to you if take it or not.
You know the straumann implant which makes the best implant but also a very high price.
I mean you could buy implant that you affordable and also with good quality to your dentist and let him implant it for you.
Think this might save you some money. And i happen to know that this website www.gobuydental.com had the product that you need with a good price. You can check it out.

6 implants and a fixed bridge..
by: Anonymous

I have 4 mini's and have wondered about the fixed bridge. I have appt for reline and will ask my dentist about this, but am curious.....how does the bridge feel? burning gone? rubbing gone?
good bite?
Thank you so much.
I thought I was the only person with this issue.
unfortunately, my dentist is not quite so patient as yours........perodontist told me there was nothing else he could do?? but he cashed my checks.

update on my fixed bridge NEW
by: Diane C

I haven't been on this forum for a while, but it helped me out a lot when I was going through "denture hell". I had posted before that I now have a bridge fixed to 6 implants that are fused to my bones. I was lucky to have enough bone and this procedure has saved my life. Nothing is fool proof, I even had an implant to fail and had to wait another 6 months for the new one to fuse. Finally, a year after I started this I got the bridge. I've had to go back twice, once for a bite problem and once to have an area fixed where the bridge was rubbing my gums. But, it was the best thing I ever did and I love them. Nothing will ever feel like your natural teeth; we take them for granted and learn the hard way.

Denture's/ implants NEW

I'm a 52 yr old male and at the age of 46 I spent $25000 grand on my teeth to only have them all pulled a year later! I now have uppers and lower dentures that I can't stand wearing and I have a hard time eating with them! My wife is a little upset with me couse the money we spent on dentures. I will get implants if I can ever afford it! It is embarrassing eating in front of people covering my mouth and just talking to people! So if there is a inexpensive implant program out there I would be interested!

There is Hope! NEW
by: Diane C

In one of my earlier comments I mentioned "Right Choice Dental Implants" located close to Louisville, KY. I got 6 implants and a bridge for my upper teeth in 2013. I am lucky that I still have most of my lower teeth. At that time they were by far the cheapest place for this procedure. I don't know where you live; I lived about 7 hours away so we just drove. It is a husband and wife team who do only implants and they are VERY good. I do not regret that I did it, it gave me back my life. Anyone who hasn't gone through it does not understand. I was getting suicidal. Do some research; I did a lot before finding these people. Wherever you live there is probably a dentist somewhere who is not in it just for the money. Also, have you ever used Care Credit? It might be an option for the payment. Good luck in whatever you do. I know the hell you're going through. Keep us posted.

When a client goes all out to NEW

When a client goes all out to spend thousands or even millions of dollars to hire a consultant, they aren't just doing so because they have so much money to spend or because they don't have enough employees to assign extra tasks to; consultants are seen as seasoned experts with exceptional skills which are considered rare. Clients believe that such skills, knowledge and experiences which consultants possess are required to help move their businesses forward or solve some of the challenges they may be facing.

One typical problem of the limousine industry is its being totally inward-looking. Unless you have had a chance to work with one such company, you would never know how it works. Though the working of such companies is apparently simple, it fact, some of them employ business practices which are fundamentally dishonest.
