Allergic to Titanium

by scarlett
(Atlanta)

I am allergic to Titanium and all metals on contact with skin and because of other allergies and symptoms, I am afraid I may be allergic to Titanium implants. I cannot find a dentist who uses alternative materials. Any advice?

Titanium
by: JP

The titanium dental implant is in the bone, but there may be the upper portion which could be in contact with the gums.

MOst dental implants are made of grade 4 or grade 5 titanium, which means it is an alloy of other materials. Titanium is used because it is biocompatible and very few people have an allergy to it, as opposed to nickel which is much more common. Allergies to this titanium are very rare.

There are allergy tests you can take to determine your allergy level. See Clifford Labs.

You may consider a ceramic zirconia abutment which is not titanium.

You can put ceramic/zirconium crowns
by: Dental Voyages

As an alternative to the implant you can put a bridge of zirconium crowns to replace the missing tooth.
Zirconium is antiallergic, so this is the way out.
