Can dental implants be used to replace molars?

My dentist said that it would be difficult to place dental implants in the far back of my mouth, especially the molar region.
He said the reason is there is less bone there. What can be done? Are dental implants still successfully placed in the molar areas of the mouth? I have a 2nd molar on the top right and lower left that may eventually need to be replaced by implants. What can be done?
Thanks - f.M

On the Upper jaw, the molars often have only a thin shell of bone after the tooth has been removed because there is a big bubble in your bone called your sinus. Sometimes surgery is needed to make bone grow in this space before dental implants can be placed.Usually the lower jaw isn?t a problem, because there are no air bubbles in there (sinuses which connect to your nose) However if you have very thin bone, it can be very difficult. For this type of case you need to evaluate the recipient site for bone volume and quality and the gingival(gum) tissue present for correct implant placement.

In some cases bone or soft tissue grafting (augmentation) is needed. Other factors to consider from a risk management perspective are the proximity of the mandibular nerve, location of lingual concavities or the boundaries of the maxillary sinus.

There are a few variables to consider to ensure success with dental implants in any area of your mouth but - YES implant success rate is about 96-99% depending on bone density and implant selection especially when dealing with implants replacing your molars.

Dental implants are stronger and more durable than their restorative counterparts (bridges/dentures) and are just as strong and will perform just as well as regular teeth would.

The most important things to consider before deciding on implants is to make sure you go to a skilled Dentist or Oral Surgeon who has performed many similar cases. Another thing to consider is your overall health. Poor oral hygiene is a big reason why some implants fail. It is important to floss and brush around the fixtures at least twice a day.

Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how to
care for your new implants. Additional cleanings of up to four times per year may be necessary to ensure that you retain healthy gums.

Best of Luck

There are basically two types of implants. Those that are placed on the jaw bone, but under the gums, and those that fit into the jawbone similar to the root of a natural tooth. Each type offers solid, non?mobile support for replacement teeth which act and feel like natural teeth.

Since both types are attached to your jawbone they can provide distinct advantages over traditional methods of replacing missing teeth.
* Implants restore proper chewing function and so you can enjoy foods previously too ?Difficult? to eat.
* You feel confident that your replacement teeth won?t move or loosen.
* You regain the closest thing to the look, feel and function of your natural teeth.
* Throw away those sticky adhesives.
* Forget about unsightly partial denture clasps which place damaging pressure on remaining natural teeth.
* Eliminate irritated and painful gums.
* Improve your speech by eliminating or reducing the ?Fullness? of full or partial dentures.
* Replace missing teeth with the look and feel of natural teeth without having to ?Cut down? healthy teeth.
* Dental implants help stop the progressive bone loss and shrinkage of your jawbone by -Mimicking- the roots of natural teeth.
* Dental implants are clinically proven with a success rate in excess of 90%.

I am a dentist from Sydney and have been performing dental implant procedures for over 30 years. Prof. BD is absolutely correct in advising patients to always view their dental implants dentists portfolio first. Dental implants are a far riskier ordeal than a simply clean and checkup. As the stakes are so high patients should also research past work by the dentist with implants, at Bondi Dental for example we have evidence and information at ww.dentistbondisydney.com.au/t-dentalimplants.aspx

Essentially dental implants can replace any tooth including molars but this may not always be the best option. Time for extracted teeth to heal, visiting the dentist on several occasions and cost are all reasons to ensure you have selected the most qualified dentist possible.

Price of Implants
by: Anonymous

Don't forget to mention the $10's of thousands you'll need to replace 4 x missing molars....

ie: approx. $5,000/tooth + any costs associated with a sinus lift... ie: 4 molars = $25,000+ for implants, sinus lift, crowns

Question about size of implanted molars vs natural molars
by: Alex in Europe

I have a new implant for my molar (lower jaw, left). My doctor fixed my new molar temporary and I noticed two things:
1. My new implanted molar is about 70% of the size of my former molar. It looks 1) smaller and 2) lower than the the tooth in front of it. Is it normal? My doctor said that he could only implanted one root (instead of two) so the new molar is safe to be smaller and lower than the former tooth.
Is it correct or he is just bamboozling me?
