Burning throbing pain at implant site

by Marianne
(Lake Worth, Florida)

I had an implant over one year ago. No problems, then they put the crown on and after about 3 months I had a burning throbing pain at the implant site. Also just aches. Went to the Dr. that did the implant. He said all is fine. Told me to go to another dr. for second opinion.

New Dr. saw a pocket next to implant. First Dr. finally agreed to clean it out. After that procedure I was fine for 6 weeks. Pain is coming back, told the Dr. and he said there is no such thing as a burning pain from implants! I have it. Now he has told me to go and get another opinion. Said he doesn't recall doing anything that would have made it better when he cleaned it out. I remember at the time he said he saw a crevace(sp) next to the implant.

FYI - I had maxillofacial surgery 25 years ago. Wires were placed around the jaw. Three years ago I started to have problems at the site of one of the wires. I begged 5 doctors to remove that wire. No one believed me. They were all afraid that I had trigeminal Neurogia (sp). Finally found a retired Dr. from Universite school of dentistry Penn. on the internet who said over the years those wire can cause problems.

One Dr. said he would remove it (after two other drs removed 2 teeth). Pain started to go away after 2 weeks. Pain-free within the next month. I was so happy to be out of pain after 1-1/2years. I'm going back to this dr. again for a second opinion (again).

That is the side that the implant was put in. About an inch from the area where the wire was pulled out. I've been back to Dr. that put in implant and he said, It has nothing to do with him." Wants me to have a wire in the upper jaw removed and see if that will make the pain go away. I'm so desperate that I will try anything. He wants me to go to a pain management dr. if that doesn't work! Can't live on pain pills.

I'm told that because the xrays show nothing, all is ok. But this happened with the wire. You couldn't see anything on an x-ray, but when it was opened they saw a problem.

I can't live with this pain. I've tried to explain to the dr. that just because it looks good doesn't mean it's working for me. I have three other implants on other side with mostly no problems. Sometimes one of them bothers me, but not to this extent. When I told the dr. about that he said nothing wrong, don't know what you're talking about.

I feel like they won't think outside the box. Just because it's not in the textbooks doesn't mean I'm not in pain. The dr. who did the implant has told me to get another opinion. I'm going again to the other dr. But this is frustrating because I'm in alot of pain and they keep saying it looks good. This dr. doesn't want to remove it and I understand that should be the last thing, but this pain is horrible and it's affecting me so much. It's hard to function when you're in constant pain.

Please any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I know something is wrong and my doctor seems to be insulted that I'm having a problem. So he sees nothing and I feel like he's telling me he's done and find someone else to help me.
Thank you

Implant Bridge - Throbbing

by Nancy
(Palmdale, CA, USA)

After A Year, Upper Right Implant Bridge - Throbbing:

I had implants placed last year on my upper right side of my mouth. There is a 3 tooth bridge implant, a single implant, then a natural molar behind that. I went in a several months after placement as something didn't feel right up there (I have a 5 tooth bridge/implant on the other upper side which never had any problems).

The dentist who put them in didn't see anything on xrays and a CT scan, neither did the oral surgeon. Now I am having throbbing on that side of my mouth and some pain up to my eye socket. The level of pain has necessitated pain killers. My oral hygiene is excellent and I have my teeth cleaned every 3-4 months.

What is happening to me?

On and off chronic pains and inflamation

One of my mother's implants had been causing her pain for the last year. The pain started about a year ago, a few months after the insertion and it just comes and goes. Sometimes it is accompanied by swelling and she tastes puss.

Her doctors don't know what the problem is. The million X-rays suggest that the implant is successful. I think it might be the fact she needs to wear dentures on top of the implants and maybe they weigh that implant down, but she says the pain comes and goes regardless on wether or not she wears them.

They already put her on an extreme oral hygiene regime months ago and she rubs that anti-infection gel very frequently.
any idea?

Problem with new implant bridge

by Miriam Feldman
(Kissimmee, Florida)

Problem with new implant bridge:

Last year I was told I had to have a crown and an implant bridge both in the upper right side of my mouth, I told my dentist I have low white blood cell count. He said that was fine that they would take extra care. We proceeded but one of the two implants failed due to bone infection.

I had bone grafts, the first failed but two months ago the implant bridge put in, it took almost a year from start to finish. The first implant would press up slightly when I bit down, after a month I saw that it was still doing that. I went back to my Doctor, he ground it down a little, it felt better but I could still feel that upward pressure/movement. I asked if it would always be that way and he said "that could be".

I refrain from chewing on that side of my mouth and today I have been getting sharp stabbing yet intermittent pain in the area. I am concerned about it failing again and/or possible bone infection, I think the Doctor should have taken another ex-ray, though I have no pain when I press on my cheek as I did when I had the bone infection.

I've moved in the last month this only adds to my problems. I can go back for a visit but not for a long term procedure. What if anything can or should I do?

Tissue redness and swelling around Implant

Tissue redness and swelling around Implant:

6 months ago, I had 10 teeth extracted, and 4 dental implants placed in my lower jaw, then a fixed Bridge attatched. I had 4 failed endo teeth that showed abcesses, and wasn't feeling well at all. So this is the treatment that my Dentist and I decided on.

Soon after, the gums around 1 implant became red, swollen and very sore. It is still that way today. My dentist says I need a tissue graft. I have excellent OH, and cleanings every 3 months. Do I have a failed implant, or need a graft?

8 implants maxilla 8th day post op They are still very sore.

by John
(Virginia Beach)

I am having 8 maxilla and 4 mandible. I had the 8 done last week. The first day was EXTREMELY PAINFUL!!! The second day through the fifth was a cake walk. Now on days 6,7 and 8 I am way more sore then 2 thru 5.

Is this normal?

I mean it is manageable and is not swollen. I do not believe infected ether since I just finished a course of anti-biotic because I have a 5 year old hip replacement. I read stories on another site about people having almost no pain at all from their implant surgery and I am thinking WTH? Then I realized they must be talking about 1 implant not 8.

So if anyone has had a similar experience or insight I appreciate your feedback.

I have had a low grade pain ever since.

by Veronica Hairston
(Phila, PA 19119)

I have two implants in my mouth. #20 And #19. # 20 was put in about 10 years ago. Everything is fine with it. # 19 was put in about 3 monts ago. I have had a low grade pain ever since. It comes on randomly. Some days I do not feel any pain. Sometimes I get a quick sharp pain.I feel a little pain in my left eye sometimes.

I know that the implant for #19 is deeper in my jaw than the other implant and it looks a little crooked. Should I have it removed?

Stiff neck following a crown placement

by Sam Bednarski
(Bilinga, QLD, Australia)

I had a crown implant almost 3 months ago and that side of my mouth and neck have not been right ever since. I have experienced tenderness along the lower teeth and a stiff neck on the same side resulting in my having to take painkillers almost every day.

Could you please let me know if I should call my doctor or dentist - I have spoken to both in the past. I'm desperate now as this is affecting my sleep - It's now 3am in the morning
Samantha
