Type 2 diabetes and hypertension

by Stephanie

I am 65 years old, Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. I lost an upper left tooth(3rd) from the back! I have no problems with this missing tooth and it does not show, If I don't have a dental implant done will it affect my shifting of teeth?

Should I be concerned because of my medical history and age or just forget it?

Very expensive between the oral surgeon and the general dentist who puts the crown on!

Fracture in the jaw ?

I've had my lower implants for a couple of years now with very few issues. Day before yesterday I was removing my mouth guard (I grind in my sleep) and one side came off before the other, causing a lot of pain on the side that didnt come loose. It is not hot to the touch or swollen, but it is really painful. It is also no loose, which I assume means there is no major bone break.

Could this pain be from a fracture in the jaw? Do I need to see the doctor?

Im wearing my mouth guard full time now as a precaution, but I am able to remove it for cleaning. There is no blood, no bad smell or taste that would indicate an infection.

I never got my flipper and my gum's swelled up..

Hi I broke my front 2 teeth and I had dental Implants done. When the procedure was done I was supposed to get a flipper, and the flipper did not fit. The doctor made some temporary teeth and she left those there. I never got my flipper and my gum's swelled up. so much I had to get my gum's lazer cut. I had asked her to give me the flipper I originally paid for but she was trying to charge me for it.

The temporary teeth she re-cemented caused my gum's to swell, because the teeth would press my gums, and I could not properly clean them. I could not get a proper fitting for the permanent crowns until she lazer cut the gums. Finally she cut the gums and I was able to get my fittings done and my permanent crowns in.

3 hours having my permanent crowns placed, and one of the crowns falls off. She is now trying to charge me for the crown and the recememntation. I paid her in cash I am not happy with this procedure because I feel like i paid all this money and no results. Just a big headache any suggestions because I still don't have my teeth just these flimsy teeth she placed as a temporary measure.

I think these are becoming permanent

Implant had failed

by Ms. Glick

Implant had failed:

I had a dental implant put in 1 year ago and it seemed to be fine. I had a temporary crown over the implant and last week my dentist put in the permanent crown. I couldn't bite down in a certain spot and she said that the bite was probably high and adjusted it. The pain got worse by the day and 1 week later the crown was taken off and the temporary crown put back on to see if the pain subsided. The pain continued to escalate, it felt like an infection.

The surgeon told me that since the pain was so bad just by touching the area, the implant had failed and he removed it. The xray seemed to indicate that the implant looked fine and fused into the bone properly. What happened? Why did it fail?

Abutment too tall.

Abutment too tall? My oral surgeon used an abutment on my implant that is too tall to place a crown on! After placement his only concern was whether it hit the opposing tooth.

My dentist is going to have to grind it down in order to place the crown. Shouldn't there have been some kind of measurements that would prevent this?

Implant post attached to sinus membrane

by Carol
(Ca)

Implant post attached to sinus membrane

The last sinus lift I had (just about 1 yr ago) turned into a bit of a problem for me. After the lift was done and the implant post put in place, everything was fine in the x-ray. When I returned a month later the x-ray showed that the post had left my jaw and worked its way up and attached itself to the very top of my sinus cavity.

The dentist had to do major cutting and digging around (about an hours worth and very painful after) to try and dislodge the post. I had to do everything from bending my head forward to even hopping up and down. He finally got it and I figured it would be okay.

Now every few months I've been getting this horrible smell in my head, with dripping down the back of my throat. It makes me lose my voice and I even get sick to my stomach. I asked the dr. if he left an old sock up there!!! He said everything was fine and there is no infection showing up in the x-rays. This has come back at least 4 or 5 times and it's driving me crazy!

The smell is so bad that I know if I stand close to anyone they'll be able to get a whiff of it. There is no mucus or feeling of fullness or ache in my sinus on that side. Even when I rub my head on that side I can feel it dripping. My dr. didn't seem to think it was a big deal but I can't find anything on the web about this happening to anyone else?

Oh ya, there is no swelling or any problem in the least with my gums or the implant area. Infact in a week I'll be going to get the impression done. It's just this putrid smell and the nausea it brings with it. CAROL

Very disappointed with the implant

My daughter had an implant done. They first had to do a bone graft. After all the healing process the crown was attached. Very disappointed with the implant. Always was getting chunks of food caught underneath the tooth. Eight months later after implant job was finished, the implant chipped while eating a piece of pizza. Was the implant set properly for her bite or was the impressions not done accurately? Very angry.

Since then, the dentist removed the old crown, took a new impression and later attached the new crown with a filling around the newly installed implant. Why are these things happening and is it normal to put a filling around the implant when seeded. Will this cause problems later?

Please! I am looking for answers and solutions to this problem.

Small hole in gum where I had dental imlplant

by Alyon
(San Diego, CA, USA)

Hi, I had a tooth implant a few years ago, yesterday I discovered a small hole in my gum where that tooth implant was placed. the hole goes all the way down to the actual implant ( I can feel it when I touch it with a really thin dental tool).

I am wondering what in the world is it? How did I get it? And is this something that needs to be fixed asap or can it wait a few months? (of course I would take extra care of my mouth to make sure I have to bacteria that can reach down in my gums and grow there). Also, is this whole going to keep getting bigger if I cannot make it to the doctor soon?

Infected gums surrounding implants

by Keith L.
(Albuquerque NM)

Infected gums surrounding implants

I have had my dental implants for 10 years. At my last dental cleaning, I was told I had alot of recession of my gums surrounding 2 implants and pus and bleeding was noted. I have been given a dental rinse to use but notice at the base of the implants they are turning black at the gum line. I am unable to contact the denist who did the implants as he has moved out of town. Just wondering what can be done about this and by whom.

Bone won't grow around the implants

by K
(Hawaii)

I have implants - top & bottom. However on the top right the bone won't grow around the implants. So now I have implants on the top left but not the right. So now I am stuck - The dentist tried an implant that should have stuck better and he said there was plenty of bone but it just didn't grow.
I do have MS, bone mass is good. Just had a bone density test.

Should I have the abuntments(sp?) things removed altogether? Any suggestions what I can do with only have one side done? I'll have a lopsided denture.
Also can the healing abuntments being used in a mri machine or should I get them taken out before the Mri?

Peri-implantitis?? What to do??

I've had 4 implants for over 17 years. My overdenture has become unusable from pain in gums around one implant. Went to 2 Drs. same day a surgeon and implant specialist. After removing the bar that connected all 4 implants they discovered all implants ere solid. That is what I told them I thought in the first place. It was the gums which were causing the problem.

I've had 2 abscesses in recent month, pain and discomfort in one implant area. They proffered that I should floss more with super floss to solve my problem. It really has not improved my state.

No one where I live has even said peri-implantitis. I've just read about it on the net. I live in Thailand.

They only seem to put implants in or take them out here in Thailand. Treating for a gum problem does not seem to interest any Dr. I've seen. I've been to several.

Where and what would you do if you were me? I have money and can travel.

Tom

My daughter had an implant break during the installation procedure. She had to have additional surgery to remove the pieces.

Is this normal or a recall event?

Teeth adhesive

Why does my dentist insist on permanent adhesive for attaching teeth to implants, he won't bend on this issue. I want temporary addhesive in case there is future prolbem and they need to be removed. He just says that is the best way to do it and I should never have a problem.

Dental implants- Recovery Question

by Amber
(Ohio)

Dental implants- Recovery Question:
I am 20 years old, I have ectodermal dyslasia and had my first implant surgery about 3 months ago. I had stitches which came out in 2 weeks, and wasn't able to really tell when looking that they had even put the posts in my lower gum.

Well, now if I pull down my lower lip I can visably see the posts which I could not before. I go back to have an X-ray in about a month, I am just worried I am giong to get bad news. Am I just overreacting, is it normal for the posts to be so visable at this time in my recovery process??

PhD in literature (is that what you wish to know?)

Shards of added bone have twice protruded through my
gum following an upper implant. Infection followed the
first protrusion, but immediate attention prevented such the second time. My surgeon's other patients have not experienced this problem; have you a record
of history for this happening?

Dentist didn't appear to really have much experience

by Marty
(London, UK)

Hello,
I had a baby tooth into my adulthood (35yrs) that cracked and was removed 18 months ago. It was off the side of the lower left front (one before the molars).

I had an implant started in October 2010 London, UK. However, the dentist didn't appear to really have much experience in this and many problems happened when trying to put in the implant. I obtained a written guarantee from the Dentist for a number of years given my concern. A week ago the implant suddenly felt funny and became loose. I've since been to the dentist and they say it has become infected and needs removing.

1 - When initially drilling the hole the implant became stuck and would not go down as deep as necessary,
2 - Upon returning the dentist broke the tool to remove the implant,
3 - Upon returning the dentist removed the implant, redrilled the hole with a slightly larger diameter drill and put in a new implant.
4 - 2 months later I had the post fitted and crown measured up.
5 - The crown was fitted a week later according to my bite.
6 - 6 months (July 2011) later the implant felt different and suddenly became loose over a number of days.
7 - Visiting the dentist he has no idea why the implant shows redness and infection or why it's suddenly been rejected.
8 - The dentist recommends antibiotics, removal and then leaving for a while before trying again.

Can you assist with why this rejection has suddenly taken place and if this has anything to do with the Dentists work?

I'm concerned that this may be down to Dentist rather than rejection and am considering whether to continue or what my options are.

Could you advise/ assist?

Thanks,
Marty

Dentist checked my implants

by Frank
(Yonkers)

I Had implants put in about 4 months ago. Went in for a cleaning, and my dentist checked my implants, while trying to remove the cover screw (which were welded tight) the implants came off.
Is that normal?
Should he have checked these cover screws periodically?
Is it normal to wait 4 months before checking implants?

How risky that I might loose that implant

by louis
(adelaide ,australia)

I had 8 maxilla dental implants and after two weeks I had pus on the front of one implant and gums in that area looked not even ,kind of bumpy. I went back to my surgeon and he prescribe another course of two different antibiotics and told me to stop using savacol and instead salty water.

After two days my infection dissapear and now I can see my implant inside my gum and that area is still sensitive on pressure but now I am worried that I might loose that implant because its exposed ,this was my first stage surgery.

My oral surgeon reckon reason for my infection was my denture which I put in after two weeks as I had to work, and I work with people where I need to talk .

my question would be:
How risky that I might loose that implant or more as it is vulnerable to infection even-thou implant got kind of screw cover .

I'm having trouble trying to expel food from the teeth when I eat

by Robyn
(Melbourne Victoria Australia)

I had crowns placed on my lower left and lower right implants 3 weeks ago there are 3 teeth per 2 implants plus one single implant in front of each bridge plus a bridge on the upper left back molar.

My problem is that I'm having trouble trying to expel food from the teeth when I eat. I've noticed that the crowns on the inside of my mouth do not go right down to the gum line although they do in the front of them, is this normal as to how they are surposed to be? As I can see the metal abutments of the implants showing.

Also they feel really wide in the inside of my mouth and having great difficulty with the tongue resting properly and speaking. Can you provide me with an answer as to this please? Or should I wait for more time to heal? Thankyou Mrs S

Would acrylic be better

by Gene T
(C'ville VA)

I'm considering 12 dental implants in lower jaw. There is bone deterioration. I have 10 porcelain crowns on my front upper teeth.

Would acrylic be better for the bottom. My concern is the brittleness of the uppers hitting the brittleness of the bottom. Perhaps the bottom should be the softer acrylic.

Private patient

by June Palmer
(Sacramento, CA USA)

Had three dental implants in my lower jaw, over four months ago. Two on the left and one on the right. The two on the left are growing up? The one closest to my front teeth is the highest. Have had the caps attached and was waiting for the teeth. When I went in for the last procedure to make the teeth, had another Xray and was told my gums were not right. I noticed the one implant was higher than the other. Was told this was not a problem.

I am 80 and in good health. Had 5 teeth removed in my lower jaw. I have high blood pressure. Am I loosing the two right implants? Very concerned? No pain. Thank you, June Palmer ggran2@msn.com
I Can request copies of my last xray. It was digital.
