Quick Decision on Dental Implant?

by Emily
(Virginia Beach)

I had root canal on a molar in January 2009. The crown was temporarily sealed because the dentist was not sure that the tooth would be stable enough.

For the past 10 months I have had nothing but off and on pain, and, the uncomfortable feeling that the bite was off. It felt like a little rock was raised up on the tooth and it kept hitting the bridge above it. Along with this, I had a bridge replaced on my upper left side. Total cost was $6000.00 - out of pocket.
Last week I had severe pain and, went to a root canal specialist. He said the tooth was "gone". My options are an implant or bridge. I went to a dentist that said he does not extract without prepping for an implant. His cost is $3600.00 and this does not include the crown. I think his prices are too expensive and frankly do not trust dentists after my original experience in January. If I am having an implant, can I simply have the tooth extracted and have the implant done at another time or, MUST it be done at the same time as the extraction. This is supposed to be done today and, I simply have so many doubts about this right now. Please advise or comment ASAP!

Thanks so much!

Mild pain and occasional bleeding around implant

by Amber
(Arlington)

Hello,
I got an implant about 5 years ago. I haven't had any problems with it until just recently, maybe the past month. I've experienced some mild discomfort--not even pain, really, more like pressure in the gum area. I have noticed some occasional bleeding, too. I had a cleaning the other day and they thought maybe it was just plaque because everything looked fine, but they didn't do any xrays or anything.

Now I think the gum might be a little swollen, and the discomfort is more consistent. Do you think I have an infection? Could it be the implant is somehow failing?

Gum issues with Flipper/Implant

by Nickie
(Winter Springs, Fl)

My front tooth is having an implant. I had a flipper (false tooth appliance) made and it has pinched, made my back teeth not touch when I eat, and rubbed a spot thru my gum over my pulled tooth cavity. Their was one where my tooth was removed and the other if the front of my mouth over the cavity, kept getting bigger . . . Dentist said that he could repair the gums and not to worry. On many ocassions. I have complainted, stopped by the dental office without and with an appointment just to have them look at my gums.

This week my dentist removed the false tooth from the flipper and put it on my implant post as a temporary tooth. I thought that he was repairing my gums. He did this without telling me or having my permission to do the removal of my gums. I have told him repeatedly, tell me what your doing.
HOWEVER, The dentist has cut my gums in a high arch over the cavity. Creating a terrilble gum line issue. The Next Day, UF, Shanes dental school (second opinion) said that before the dentist cut all of my gum off, it wasn't very repairable. Gum grafts are painful, very pricey and 50-60% successful.

What to do?? Having my gums cut in such a high arch that it will create a gum problem in years to come. PLUS my tooth looks like a "cone head" tooth. I'm told not to worry because the top of the cone head tooth when it's permantant, the top will be painted pink. GREAT!!!
I am so screwed....What to do?????

Body rejecting the implant

My aunt had a molar replaced with a dental implant about a year ago. Since then the bone disappeared from around the top of the implant. Since it's a molar, it's not really so visible, but I don't think that is good. What if it keeps disappearing? Is the body rejecting the implant?

Rotation of implant

by Caroline
(London)

I had an implant placed over a year ago, and had no issues with it since.
Recently, I've noticed that the tooth on it is about 45 degrees out of line! I guess it happened gradually, but it's pretty weird now. Luckily it's an upper molar so no-one else will see.

So a couple of questions:
1) Is this likely to be the base of the implant rotating in my jaw bone, or just the top part rotating? I don't know what brand it is, but it's a smooth post and socket that are just tapped together, not screwed in, so I guess there's nothing really to stop it rotating...
2) Is this normal?!

I have every intention of getting to my dentist as soon as I can (I'm out of the country on business at the moment), but any info in the mean time would be very helpful!

Thanks!

Lida

by Lidia
(Sacramento,Ca)

My implant was placed in March, 11. I had some low grade pain on and off, then pain went away for a month. Now on the side of the implant - soft gum pocket when I push pus comes out.

My dentist told it is superficial and to keep flossing and rinsing with salt water or chlorexidine, x-ray was fine. A am not convinced by dentists reply.

Nine months since I had my implants

by Kaygey
(Ireland)

It's now nine months since I had my implants(2 on upper jaw), as I didn't get back to Turkey in Sept to get teeth on them when I intended-
is it all right to leave it until May? Also the screws have fallen out after 4 months, will this affect putting on teeth ?

Crown falling off the implant

I had an NHS implant and crown about 22 years ago after I was hit in the mouth. It became unsightly as my gums have receded and I paid to have the crown replaced with a more pleasing one that wouldn't show and continued under my gum.

The NHS one never moved but this tooth keeps loosening and has fallen out over 5 times this year. My dentist has cemented it back in and is now going to replace the post.

I have had to have some gum excised to reveal the stump which has really upset me and I now don't want to smile. Will a new post help and would using a sonic toothbrush loosen the cement ?

Loose Dental Implant

I had an implant about 6 years. I went to the doctor for cleaning and he indicated that I had gum infection around the implant. He had an x-ray done and then aggressively cleaned the gum around the implant. His conclusion was that the implant was loose (I did not notice) and that the bone mass around the tooth was deteriorating.

The next steps should be - clean infection with antibiotics, take the implant out, heal, do the bone implant in a couple of months and then go for a new dental implant in about 6 months. After the cleaning the implant is getting looser every day. I do not understand how it could all happen in just one day!

Any advise?

Dental Implant Failure

Is it possible to have a dental implant failure after 5 years that it's been restored with a crown and fully functional ?!

I had the job done about 5 years ago and was very happy with the results both esthetically and functionality of the tooth.

I have routine check-ups and all looked good until a few weeks ago when i started to have pain in the area of the implant tooth - is that possible? Isn't the implant part of my jaw-bone by now? How can I have pain in something that has no nerve?!

Can i lose the implant? I really don't want to go through the whole dental implant surgery again! I made an appointment to see my dentist in 3 weeks - so for now I use salt water mouth wash and floss a lot.

What do you think??
Rachel

Ridge is too narrow

by Tina
(Chicago, IL USA)

After 15 years and a few bone grafts, what started as an iffy implant due to a narrow ridge it appears I may have an issue going on.

My question is...if there is insignificant bone and the ridge is too narrow, do they remove the implant itself or just the artificial tooth?
