Gluing two implants together

Gluing two implants together:

Hello,

I'm having several implants placed in my mouth and have had the temporary abutments in place for about five months. In my next visit on March 3, the dentist is going to take impressions. He suggested last week that on teeth 2&3 and 17&18 he would like to glue them together because this would keep them from moving 360 degrees. While this may make them more secure, I foresee problems with his suggestion.

For instance, if one tooth fails or chips, then I have to place two crowns. Also, it would form a small bridge, creating a pocket for food to collect. Since the implant is fused to the bone, why would there be any need to glue the teeth together? Is gluing molars and premolars standard practice?

I would sincerely appreciate your timely advice so I can speak intelligently with my dentist.

Respectfully,

Jeff

Put to sleep for a tooth implant

Do you have to be put to sleep for a tooth implant? I need two implants and I'm pregnant and can't have gas. If so, is it extremely painful?

Implant or Bridge?

by William W.
(Torrance, CA, USA)

I went to a dentist for a clean up and ended with a diagnostic of molar extraction, the molar in the right lower jaw cannot be saved (heavy bones loss due to bacteria activities). I'm cool with the extraction (not expensive) but the optional proposed bridge (not covered by insurance) is substantially higher.

Here's my question: is it better to get an implant or a bridge to replace the missing molar? The molar to be removed is the metallic one on the attached photo.
Please advise. Thank you.

Remove old Screw & insert a new screw or a bridge?

I am 82 and had an implant a few months ago. The implant had gone bad. The old screw needs to be removed and a new one put in. The Dentist does not want to do this, but wants to build a bridge to the adjoining tooth.

I want an implant. I paid for an implant, and I do not want a bridge onto my good tooth.

Please let me know what I may ask my dental expert to do. HE says that the only thing that I can do is to make a bridge.

Thank you !

Dental implant in a space created after extracting.

by dr. anitha harish
(bangalore karnataka india)

Can the implant be placed in a space created by extracting the lower first molar. the tooth has got extracted 3years ago and been replaced by white metal crown after one to one and half years. the space is insufficient to place first molar tooth implant. the space is slightly closed by drifting of the adjacent teeth.

Dentist hit the nerve

by Josephine Fetter
(Lewisburg, Pa.)

I had two dental implants. During the second one, the dentist hit the nerve (twice). In two days, he had me come back in and he removed one of the implants. I have constant pain (like shock waves going across my lip), and I also have numbness. Will it ever go away?
I have a difficult time eating because of the pain.

Constant pain after implants

by Sarah
(devon)

Constant pain after implants:
Hi, I had 4 mini implants fitted a week ago, the last one was fitted where they removed a tooth the same day.
One month before this was done I was given antibiotics for an infection around the teeth to be removed. I was given a second course of antibiotics to take after the implants were fitted. I was given strong pain killers, and was taking them every 4 hours day and night.

Eight days later after going back to the dentist, I'm now taking a third lot of antibiotics, and he also put something in my gum where the implant was placed, as it was still not properly healed after the extraction. I'm now wondering if the implant is touching a nerve or something, as the pain never goes, do you think it would help if I had this implant removed and let the area heal up properly where the tooth was removed, then have it put back later.

My dentist mentioned at the time maybe leaving the final implant, I just wish he had insisted on it, instead of letting me decide what to do, I just wanted it over with, so thought while I'm here, may as well get it done, surely it's his job to know whats best and should have told me that's what to do.

How long is the pain going to go on for?

concerned patient

by melynn2
(Overland Park, KS)

My dental implant on my anterior #9 has failed. The implant was originally placed in my mouth roughly 5-7 years ago. I am a 33 year old female. All this stems from a bad root canal I had when I was eight.

I do not smoke, and I take very good care of my teeth. I recently went back to go see my periodontist due to puss and infrequent bleeding of the implant gum tissue. The puss and bleeding in the gum could not be controlled no matter what I tried.

I went back to my periodontist to try and fix this situation, but unfortunately the implant could not be saved. My periodontist says the implant failed due to a breakdown of the hydroxyapatite coating on the implant.

He tells me that the breakdown of the hydroxyapatite coating on the implant caused an allergic reaction that lead to the degeneration of the bone in the infected area, and thus causing the inflamed tissue.

When the implant was removed, he said that there was no bone left in the area, and that the implant was held in place by inflamed tissue.

I have recently had a bone graft done, and will likely need another one. My questions are:

How do I know for sure this is the reason that the implant failed? Or was I allergic to the implant metal itself? Or was it something else? Is there a test I can require him to perform to find out what I am allergic to? How do I know that the next implant wont have the same issue?

Being that my implant is in the very front of my mouth, I am very insecure about the way it looks. Is another implant still the best option for my situation? Or is a bridge a better option for my case? My periodontist isn't keen on doing a bridge because the two teeth on either side of the area have never been touched, or even had a cavity. It would mean filing down to perfectly healthy teeth. Please help. I feel lost and I am not sure what I should do next.

Implant pain after 3 weeks

I had an implant done over 6 months ago that failed. I waited for things to heal and then about three weeks ago I had it done again. I don't remember having this sort of pain the last time. I went in for x-rays and Dentist said it looked okay and gave me an antibiotic.

The antibiotic is almost finished but the throbbing hasn't subsided in the least. My Dentist did say that the implant was placed a bit deeper this time. Do you think this is why it still gives me pain 3 weeks later? Or do you think the Dentist could have placed it too deep?
Thanks,
Donna

front implant pain and discomfort

by tessa
(Canton, GA)

front implant pain and discomfort:

I got a front tooth implant last year. had a bone graft. the abutment is situated where my tongue rests in the roof of my mouth and it feels large and is hard to eat and talk with. my tongue is always sore. now the implant feels like there is always "pressure and stuff in it" I clean it like crazy. But within about an hour it feels full again and hurts. I am also achey all over and headache for three days.

Could it be failing and be infected? or do I have the flu and the tooth will always be uncomfortable. I was told it was not my natural tooth and to teach my tongue not to rest on it. I'm 56. kind of hard to change now. thanks.

Dental implant crown was not entirely white anymore

I had a dental implant this year and recently a crown was placed. However, within the same day that the crown was placed, I felt very tiny pieces of stuff in my mouth, and when I looked at myself in the mirror, I found out the dental implant crown was not entirely white anymore. There is a hole in the middle on top of my implant.

When I called my dentist, he said it's not a big problems, that's very common, it's called: "well", just return to the office and he will fill it up with some white stuff.
Is that true? Just fill it up or should I request to get a new crown?
Thank you.

Implants was on an angle

by Harry Beis
(Montreal, Qc)

I just received two dental implants on my upper right jaw, and after viewing the panaromic It was apparent that one of the implants was on an angle. Upon asking the dentist he informed me that the quality of the bone on the adjacent teeth was more substantial. I don't know if this jeopardizes the strength and durability of the implant.

Bleeding restarts after root canal

Bleeding restarts after root canal:

I had root canal treatment for my upper right tooth. There was quite a big cavity and enough infection but luckily without much pain. The doctor cleaned my nerves by removing the infection using the thin rods. It took me 5 sittings, every time the doctor cleaned she found enough blood that vanished later after cleaning. However on the 5th sitting the doctor closed my tooth with permanent filling and now after a month I am having this internal bleeding in the roots again. no pain yet on eating but there is some on special times.

Summary: I am having my roots still bleeding after root canal. Is there a medicine to get it fixed or should I agian do rc. To mention here I was waiting for the satbility before put a cap on. Advice please. Thanks

MJ

Implants with crowns or 6-8 implants with a bridge?

I am missing all my upper teeth and have 9 remaining teeth on the bottom. I would like to get implants for each missing tooth. I haven't seen that as an option on service lists, just the 6-8 implants with a permanent bridge. Wouldn't implants with a crown conserve more bone?

I'm afraid the bridge won't last very long because of bone shrinkage where the implants aren't with the bridge. Also isn't it harder to clean a bridge? I understand the price issue but I'm 26 and need these teeth to last a long time, I'm willing to pay on them for a long time, i hate my dentures, I can't eat a lot of things and they changed my face, for the worst.

So which is better, implants with crowns or implants with a bridge?

doctor said it would last 15 years but it's only been 4 years and now its really really loose.

I taste a weird disgusting taste. I can smell a HORRIBLE smell. what can I do? I do remember the dental implant has a titanium rod and I didnt have much tooth there to begin with.

two implants placed in my lower jaw

by naishadh
(surat -india)

I had two implants placed in my lower jaw on the right hand side of my body in place of one missing grinding tooth. Initially after examination doctor suggested to put two implants to hold the artificial cap as it will give feeling of a permanent tooth. Thereafter two implants were inserted successfully.

After three months doctors found that smaller implant which was not put deep enough in the jaw bone is shaking and therefore removed it. Subsequently, suggested that we will put a fresh and bigger one in place of removed implant.

Now, while placing that doctor felt that he has gone 2 to 3 mm deeper then it was required and got frightened that I may have some problem in regaining sensation at chin and lower lip but with grace of god I gained sensation after 3 hours at these places.

What are the hazards which can sometimes permanently damage my sensation while putting this implants.

Is it advisable to continue with these implants or for safety reasons, should I remove both the implants to become very safe.

I am traveling abroad within few days, therefore I need not want to go with some worry.

Top of dental implant showing

I have read other questions regarding the top of the implant showing after the stitches were removed and the gum not growing over the implant. I have the same issue and there is no healing cap or any type of cap on my implant. What I see is the top of the implant.

Severe, persistent pain one week after TAD implant

I had 4 TADs inserted a week ago as part of my orthodontic treatment plan. The procedure took 5.5 hours due to difficulties with thick gum tissue and very hard bone.

I had the expected swelling and soreness of my jaw/pain on the left side, but the right side was much more painful and swollen. Initially, I was able to get my toothbrush in my mouth to brush fairly well. Since day 2, I haven't been able to open my mouth any wider that the tip of my index finger. I've been on antibiotics, faithfully using the hexidine rinse, and a waterpik; no visible signs of infection in my mouth and no fevers, etc.

My left side seems to be just fine but the pain in my right side is excruciating! I was only taking Tylenol (allergic to hydrocodone, etc.) and the pain wasn't being managed. I went back to see the orthodontist on day 4. He examined me (the best he could since I can't open my mouth well) and took some x-rays. He said the placement of the TADs were correct and he felt I'd be improving rapidly from then on. The pain continued to increase to the point that I went to the ER on day 6.

Basically, I feel like I have the most unimaginable sinus infection of my life with pain that radiates well past the sinuses and down into my lower jaw, along with a terrible earache, swollen gland under my right jawbone, an intermittent clenching of the muscle at the back of the jaw (near the ear), and a sore throat. However, the ER exam and CT scan show no sinus or ear infection. It did show some inflammation on the right side.

The orthodontist did tell me that the TAD on the right at the back was inserted further than the corresponding one on the left. (The two TADs that were inserted closer to the front of the mouth went in fairly easily with no trauma or complications). Due to the pain, should I consider having it removed or "backed out" a bit? What would you recommend?

Implant for the Lateral incisor

by Mr leonard
(perth Australia)

I have had a bridge for 30 years.I am now 47 years old. The bridge spans from Central incisor to Canine (Cuspid)meaning that the Lateral incisor is missing and was the reason for getting the bridge.

My question is- could I get an implant for the Lateral incisor even though it has been missing for 30 yrs ? I would also get crowns for Central incisor and Canine (Cuspid). Also as expeceted the gum has receaded on the bridge Lateral incisor so it makes that tooth look longer. Will an implant solve that problem too?

Thanks

Can permanent caps be removed from an implant?

by jeanne
(stamford Ct)

Can permanent caps be removed from an implant?

I recently had 2 implants on my front teeth and believe my jaw is misaligned as a result. They seem to be pushing my jaw back. I found a plaster cast of my teeth from before the procedure done by a different dentist and my bite is very different.

Is it possible to remove the caps if this is the case? They have been permanently glued on.

Naturally, I will have this checked carefully but I am getting a bit scared that I will be stuck with this for life.

I have been having terrible vertigo for the past year while the work was being done and I recently learned this can also result from jaw misalignment.

Feeling a Partial Implant

I had a tooth extracted and a partial dental implant put it about 5 weeks ago. I have absolutely no pain, however I am feeling a tugging in the gum surrounding the partial implant area. I am wondering if this is normal.

It is an upper implant. It is the 5th tooth from the front. I got my stitches out almost 2 weeks ago. When I drink from a straw I can feel a "tug" in the implant area. I am a smoker, however, I have not been "smoking" since I had the tooth removed. I have had a few cigarettes, about 5, in the 2 weeks since the stitched have been removed (I had none while the stitches were in).

I am wondering if this feeling is possible implant failure, or simply a normal response to foreign feelings in my mouth.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

My biggest problem is that I an getting pain in side the implants and every time I bite down it really hurts. What are my options?
Can I take all implants out and try for dentures I know it sounds stupid but I can't take the pain anymore.

Implant placed in the wrong place

by Carol Montgomery

My periodontist placed the implant too high!
Three other dentists said that it would be impossible to attach a crown. The implant is adjoining the sinus area, so it could by risky to try to remove it.
What solutions, if any, can you suggest?

Descended nerve

by Nicholas Bott
(Elkins, WV)

I believe I have some kind of descended nerve in my upper jaw because I had two extractions and they were both very painful afterwards. More specifically I had a wisdom tooth that when pressure was put against, I felt incredible pain.

When it was pulled, I felt that pain constantly for days. The tooth next to it I also had pulled because of an infection, and it was causing that same type of pain as well.

I was worried about a dental implant hitting this same "nerve", because it is an extreme pain I experienced with the two teeth.

Sure enough, after having the post put in, I was in extreme pain, feeling it in that same "nerve".

The dentist assures me that there is no nerve in that area; but, I am skeptical that I am simply an odd ball case with a nerve that is atypically lower.

He gave me more pain medication to try to allow it to heal for a longer period of time, but Vicodin doesn't help at all, and Oxycodone only helps for a short time. The pain is so great that it wakes me up from sleep once the drugs wear off.

It has been three days and the pain has not showed any signs of going away. I read somewhere that if you are experiencing pain from an implant, it will never go away until the implant is removed.

My fear is that no one is going to be able to place an implant because of this "descended nerve" issue I seem to have. Can anyone recommend a solution? The only thing I can think to do is have the recently placed implant removed, and possibly find a specialist who can scan for nerves and somehow avoid them, or place a more shallow implant perhaps...

Thanks.

Jawbone pain

by Marlene
(Ft. Laud., Fl. USA)

I wear dentures with a full upper plate and a partial bottom plate. A little over a year ago I had a lower tooth removed and the dentist used bone to build up the gum for proper fitness of the lower partial.

For the past three weeks I have experienced pain in the gum originating at the point of the implant and pain in the jaw. If there is a problem with the bone itself, diseased or something, what would the effects be.

Tasting some puss.

by Greg
(Pa)

I've had my implant for approximately 2 years now. I've just recently noticed some tenderness (not discomfort) at the gum site only when I press on it. I've also very recently been tasting a bit of puss on occasion. It's not "leaking" from anywhere just faintly notice the taste of it in my mouth.

Today after brushing my teeth I was trying to figure out what could be wrong and noticed that the crown that's attached to the abutment is a bit loose. It's still holding on but will need re-adhered. The entire assembly as a whole is not loose but this puss taste has got me extremely worried that something serious could be wrong with it.

I have not/do not smoke and am a very healthy person. What do you think the puss taste would be coming from?

Gums have receded

I have just had 7 dental implants fitted. They were very expensive for me , so I thought that they would be 'perfect'. However, they look only - O.K., BUT the five on one side at the top, including one front tooth, instead of showing gum - they go right up and look like huge teeth.

When I was shown the outcome by my Dentist, I said that I was not too happy, but he said that because my gums have receded, that was the best he could do. Is this acceptable??

Is it possible to graft after implants have been placed?

by Chris
(Manchester)

I have had one implant placed into my upper jaw. When the implant was placed the dentist placed some synthetic grafting material. My dentist is concerned that the density of the bone is not that great and wants to give it longer to heal (already 6 months). My question is whether additional grafting would help?

Replacing dental implant

Replacing dental implant that came out:

I had an implant put in over 15 years ago (lower left, second from the back). I was eating last night - nothing sticky, just some meat - and the whole thing came out. There is a 1/4 inch long plastic-looking tube coming out of the bottom of the tooth. Can this be replaced or reinserted without starting the process over?

I have had a sore spot that is not visible to the Dentist, but tastes like copper

by Judy
(Watertown, Wi.)

for about a year , I have had a sore spot that is not visible to the Dentist, but tastes like copper to me and sometimes sticks to my tooth, right over an old capped tooth. No cause is found but it hurts so much that I have been putting Vicks on it to sleep sometimes. This keeps it from sticking on to my tooth and distracts me from the annoyance so I can sleep.

Is there something about that 26 year old capped tooth with the metal backing, that could be responsible for this?

2 years ago, another Dentist told me he thought he saw decay starting under this tooth at the receeding gum line on the xray, but I didn't feel anything wrong at that time so I thought he was making it up . And it's never shown up on any other x-rays that other Dr.s have ever mentioned since, however now I am going back to that finding in my mind.

I see a Dentist twice a year, and hardly have any cavities, but this may be the cause. If so could having this tooth removed and a new implant put in be the cure? It is the 2nd tooth on the left side in front so I can't go without a replacement, but since it looks fine, I have been resistant to spending the $2,000 of so it would undoubtedly require.

I am retired so the expense is a concern, however, my husband still has his job and insurance, but we don't know from week to week how long that will last. I don't want to get into a big project and then have no coverage.

But I am sick of this pain, and concerned about Cancer even though no one can see anything.... Please tell me what I should tell my new Young Dentist on my next visit on Sep. 9, 2011. Thank you, Judy

Dental implants in wrong place

by Jean Parker
(Jax,Fl)

In August 2010 I went to have two dental implants at which time the dentist placed the first part of the implant in my gum. In June 2011 I went back to have the implant completed and told him that he was putting it in the wrong place he refused to listen and continued and I am almost certain that he put it directly into my gum. If i am right about this will this cause problems for me.

One screw is visible

I have recently (Feb/2011) undergone dental implant surgery (4 titanium implants) after extraction of all uppers for the purpose of implant secured denture. One screw is visible and sticks out about 3 or 4 mm and has done since day one.

Is this acceptable or should all screws be under the gums during healing?
Thnx, Jan

Is this a reasonable request?

Lower molar Tooth is 3/4 filled. I now have another small cavity on this tooth also. It is recommended that I have the entire filling removed (it is silver) and replaced with white filling plus have the other small cavity filled and then a crown put on.

I don't want this done as I want an implant. Is this a reasonable request?

Implants don't last forever - what happens afterwards?

Implants don't last forever:
Mid-20's, good health, no smoking no drugs... etc. Infection hit a third molar in upper jaw, dentist gave the usual "50/50 chance of keeping for 5 years" for root therapy and crowning.

He recommends an implant/crown instead because I tried the same thing with lower-jaw 4th molar with another dentist and that failed in one year. He said my natural bite just doesn't work.

From what I read, implants have an average life of around 20 years. For an older person that is not a problem because they would have lost most of their teeth anyway. For me, I would still be in mid-40's, and I am wondering if I can then do another implant, or would the change in bone structure caused by the nails means I will not have the tooth anymore.

The issue is what's best for my other teeth in the long run, assuming I live to mid-80's (all my family lives to 90's, it's genetic). Appearance and "confidence" is not in consideration, only functionality is.

Tooth Implant would I need braces?

by Travis
(California)

I am missing my right lateral incisor and I'm planning on getting an implant soon. I currently wear a flipper but that flipper use to be a complete retainer with metal and metal joining my front two teeth together and it also has a tooth.

My dog jumped on the coffee table when I had taken it off to eat and grabbed it, and bit it, causing half of it to break. Luckily only left side of the retainer broke leaving the tooth and right side intact, thus enabling me to wear it still.

The problem is I have a small gap in my front teeth, now would it be best to get braces while I receive my implant or how would that work?

Am I best off getting a retainer that brings my two front teeth back together and then not needing braces at all?

I'm just wondering as I have no idea if braces are needed when you get an implant. I didn't want the teeth to close in around the screw etc.

Help. Problems after jaw surgery.

I had jaw surgery on both jaws 6 months ago. I have recently been smelling a foul odor when I smile or when I pull my lip out! When I first started to smell the foul smell, I saw my Dr. To see if it could be an infection. The Dr. Told me everything looked good & there was no infection.

Before I had the jaw surgery they told me I had two cavities : my dentist told me he would fix it when I got my braces off. Could this be why I am having this smell? I get my braces off in a few weeks: I also have a cleaning to get done & my cavities filled in a few weeks.

Please help. I have never suffered from bad breath/ foul smells! Thxs

Bitting on lips after dental implant

by Kim
(Westminster, CA)

Bitting on lips after dental implant:
My mom had her dental implant done a couple of years ago. Looks like the healing process is correct. However, her gums at the implant area is higher and have receded higher then the other teeth. Is this normal? Can anything be done to fix the receding gum?

Also, after the implants, she bites on her lips alot so she's afraid to even chew. She went back to the dentist, and she just shorten the teeth then the rest of the others, which looks ridiculous. Also, she now also bites on her toungue and lips while eating. is there anyway they can fix this problem and replace the implant? Is it normal to bite on your lips and toungue after implants?

Post implant functions

Post implant functions:
Eating after implants -

I just had an implant installed. Two posts but one crown to act for two teeth. Lower left molars. Now that the final is put in, when I eat, so much food becomes lodged at the base and where the implants meet my real teeth on both sides.

I feel too much space in a pyramid shaped at the gum meeting the teeth. I was told by the dentist that it was normal, that implants are balloon shaped.

It doesn’t feel right and is not enjoyable when eating. it's a big job to clean the implants after eating. I’m trying to be open minded and maybe get use to it, but my gut feeling says it’s wrong.

I feel it should be like normal teeth if not better. I know food will get between, but the amount is too much. Any advice? Please confirm.

IMPLANTS- recovery question?!

by Amber
(Ohio)

I had my first surgery for my implants about 2 months ago, and after the surgery i had stitches (which came out in 2 weeks) and couldn't see any of the posts that they had put in but now I am beginning to notice the posts are some what visable if I pull down my lower lip I can make them out in my lower gum. I had 9 implants placed, & the only ones that seem to be very visable are the ones on the bottom. Now, I am only 20 years of age, and have ectodermal dysplasia, so i'm not sure if this is normal, or if i'm over reacting. please help! I go back to have an x-ray next month, and i'm so scared that it's going to be bad news!

Failed Implant

Failed implant--do I try again or do a bridge?

After a root canal and two crowns, I was advised to have an implant on an upper back molar. I did--and things seemed fine. Two years later I had infection and bone loss near the implant. Had it looked at by oral surgeon who recommends removal and replacement of implant.

My dentist says this area has rejected everything we have done for five years and so we should do a bridge. I don't know what to do.

Is this a dental implant?

by Mark Harris
(Gulf Breeze Florida)

I found this item with accompanying gold in a recovered stolen vehicle. The gold is eight 2 mm squares bonded into sets of 3 and five. I had it tested and it is 16 carat. What I believe may be an implant is broken on one end. It has twists on one side only with the rest smooth.

It is not a drill bit as it is too small and the twists do not go all the way around. It may represent a crime but law enforcement is not interested. Can you tell me if it is consistent with a dental implant or the gold with dental gold? Thank you.
