Do I really need a denture??

by lauren

Had 2 bottom back teeth pulled out a few months ago and today I went to the dentist he said I need a denture for them as the other teeth will start to turn in and cause pain. I've never heard anything like it. I really don't want it as I wont wear it. The people who I've asked have said its rubbish and that the dentist just wants to make more money.

What do you think?

Hi Lauren,

It sounds like he is saying you actually need what we call a "partial" (some people refer to it as a "partial denture"). This will not be the huge thing that replaces all of your teeth which you may be thinking of. It is small and removable, though, so it is not permanent.

The reason he wants to put something in this area is so the teeth do not drift. This is very common and it can cause significant changes in the way your teeth bite together.

Ask your dentist if you are a candidate for dental implants in this area. This is a nice permanent alternative to a partial or denture. If he seems fit on the partian but doesn't give you a good explanation you may want to seek a second opinion with an implant specialist.
