How soon after extraction can an implant be fitted?

my UL2 has to come out as it is pretty rotten, has had previous root canal work & currently has a crown.
Reading other posts it seems normally ok for an implant to be fitted straight away, but there are slight signs of infection in the root on the x-ray.

Assuming everything clears up & there is no longer any infection. how long should I wait after extraction to have an implant fitted.

Many Thanks

Pete
