Implant Crown Popped Off

by Kris
(Albany, NY)

Had an Implant put in on tooth #30(second to last lower molar), exactly two years ago. Last night the implant crown popped off the post in one whole piece. It felt loose so I gently pushed on it with a q-tip and it easily popped off! The tooth looks ok, no broken edges etc...I wanted to know if this was normal? Especially so soon after the initial placement?
I am 39 yrs years old.

*I did have a grinding problem that is now well under control. I faithfully use a professional night guard my dentist made for me. I've read that it may be that my bite is off thus causing the crown to come loose.

I will also add that the first time the crown was attached, two years ago, it was too small and had wide gaps around it, this caused food to collect adjacent to and underneath. The dentist had to replace the first crown with the existing one. Making the newer one larger as I implored him to do. However, the new tooth seems too small as well. Much shorter than the others. This is bcuz the upper tooth had dropped down so the crown had to be made smaller than the surrounding teeth.

He tells me that my grinding has made my bite off so to speak and wants to crown my entire mouth as well! I cannot afford the $35,000.00+ sticker on that procedure, especially for something that really for me is a cosmetic issue. For this reason I wanted to have just the front few teeth repaired, either crowned, capped etc....

However, he claims that ALL the teeth need to be built up or else having just a few done would cause the new crowns/caps to break w/in a week! I know I'm going off topic a bit? but wanted to include the entire big picture so you could best assess my situation.

Questions;
#1- Is the crown able to be cemented back on if it wasn't damaged? (I cringe thinking he will charge me for an entire new crown at $3000 a tooth!) Also, why didn't he use the 'Screw-it-on method' as opposed to cement? which can and obviously does break down (by design or choice I surmise).
*Shouldn't this be covered by warranty being it's only two years old and has already cost me about $4,000.00??? If not, what is a ball park cost for repairing a crown in this situation? This could put us in the poor house if it has to be replaced every two years! I thought implants were supposed to last forever!? I'm regretting ever having it done now, which up until this point I absolutely loved!

#2- Is it possible to have cosmetic work done to just the front teeth? By way of veneers, caps, bonding, crowns, not sure what method would be best, but grinding down all of my teeth to be fitted for crowns is a sobering thought! As I have read this is done all the time, yet my dentist's approach seems limited as he wont even discuss alternatives. I know I need a second opinion, and value yours greatly.

Thank you for your time and attention in this matter,
~K

Lost Cover of implant

by Connie
(Thousand Oaks, Ca USA)

I Lost Cover of implant - Can you tell me if there is anything temporary that I need to do to save my implant, will the screw in my jaw be o.k if left uncovered until I see Dentist on the 18th? It seems like there is pain where I lost the cap of the implant, is this considered as an emergency?

Loose Implant

by Arijit
(Kolkata, India)

I had done my implant (screw) in May 2010. Now the doctor advised me to see him after 3 months. I moved out of country and now after 3 months suddenly i feel my implant is loose. for the last 2 weeks the screw used to come out.

This morning when i woke up i found that the implant has come out and i could not fit the denture back in. I m really worried if the implant is being rejected or not. To add to the problem i cannot find a good dentist in the country that i am in. I am thinking to return back as soon as possible. What are your suggestions on this?

Implant fell out

by Rick
(Blue Springs MO)

I had 2 implants placed a process that took about a year with 3 or 4 surgeries. One implant feels fine and solid, the other was a little loose and painful at first, got progressively looser( and more painful) Then fell out. It didn't even bleed when it came out and the area was no longer painful, we have started over with a new bone graft( more pain) should I continue or call it quits?

Wobbling Implant Crown

by Wayne
(Southington, CT)

Wobbling Implant Crown

My implant was put in place over ten years ago and was just fine until last March (2010). It then began to wiggle back and forth until my Dentist did something (new screw?) to tighten it. After doing so, the gum around the back side of my implant was tender for some time. It settled down after a couple of months and has been fine until now. It, again, wiggles back and forth and will swivel, slightly , on its axis.

As I recall, the doctor said that in earlier models of the implant appliance the base and the screw were not made heavy enough to hold up. He said that there is nothing wrong with the bone around the appliance. I also recall that he didn't have the correct size screw when he made the fix a year ago.

Were implants of that era not designed properly? I do not eat sticky foods (i.e.,
caramels, taffy) nor do I eat and chew hard foods.

my daughter's titanium screw just broke in half for no reason

by Larry Carroll
(Altavista VA)

The titanium screw remained intact in the implant and in the abutment. Neither was loose. Seems like the screw just failed. Has anyone else had this happen. She was just brushing her teeth when it happened. The tooth is next to her upper front tooth. The screw is titanium; is that a safe metal and are their any compatibility issues with titanium?

Lost implant cover screw

I think I Lost implant cover screw -

I've just had 3 implants in the lower jaw. On each there was a circular cover plate. After a week I noticed one was missing. The dentist says he only put two covers on and it doesn't matter. I know there were 3 in place. I must have swallowed one of them.
Does this matter?

Dental Implants Falling Out

by Rick

I have had dental implants for about 7 years now and the other day one of my implants came right out of the bone. It also looks from my jaw x-ray that there is a shadow which might be a crack in the jawbone where the implant came out.

Since I have 3 implants for my dentures I am in ok shape for now. There is also an issue which my dr is going to look at next week on one of the other pegs. I always assumed that the pegs were for life but now I see they in fact are not.

What would my options be if all 3 implants fail short of starting over again.
