Pain from implant crown

by lundy

I had an implant installed about a year ago, replacing a top front tooth. After a week or two, I had no pain and felt fine.

But then when I had the crown put on a few months ago, I started having slight pain and pressure, and occasional bleeding. My dentist didn't see anything wrong on the x-ray. He told me to floss deeper, using a wide tape-type floss. But it's not really helping.

I recently chewed something tough which pressed only on that tooth, and it made the pain and pressure slightly worse.

Any idea what the problem is, and how to fix it?

Pain
by: Sharon B., RDH

Hi Lundy,

Because there is not an actually, anatomical "tooth" there, the pain you are feeling is probably from the gums around the crown. I suspect that the gums are still getting used to the crown being on the implant, and are having some slight irritation due to that as well as food/debris/plaque being under the crown. I would also recommend flossing around the crown at least once a day, sliding the floss against the crown under as far as it reaches, as your dentist has advised. A warm salt-water rinse can also help with any inflammation, and rinses such as Listerine can help when there is mild gingivitis.

If the condition continues past 2 weeks see your dentist.

Loose crown causing pain?
by: Lundy

Hi Sharon,

As I said in my original post, I've been flossing carefully every day for several months, and the pain hasn't gone away.

My recent experience with the more severe pain when I chewed something hard with that tooth makes me think something is loose - either the crown is loose on the abutment, or the abutment is loose on the implant. So when I chew something, the crown presses into the gum and causes pain.

Does that make sense?

My dentist is at a loss since the X-rays show no issues, so I'd appreciate anyone's opinion for what problems to look for.

I have been experiencing the same thing! Did your pain ever go away with time? My situation is exactly the same as yours and my dentist did an x-ray too and nothing was found, I think he is at a lose...

I had an two implant crowns with four teeth on lower right in back placed 9-20-12 and today 9-21-12 I have been in pain all day. The teeth feel like they are too big for my mouth. I have bit my jaw and it hurts to eat. It has also made my head hurt. I am miserable. I tried to tell my dentist that it did not feel right but he would not listen. What can I do?

The crowns in your mouths might be too high for your bite. Meaning your original tooth was lower than the crown is, have your dentist take a look at your bite and potentially sanddown or shorten the crowns a little. The other problem might be nerve damage and being in need of a root canal.

I have also experienced pain from my front tooth implant. It has been several years since my implant and all of a sudden the implanted tooth started to hurt. I thought it was an infection and went on antibiotics even though there was no redness or inflammation. Later the MRI of my mouth showed that a piece of the cement had broken off up in the implant and had to be surgically removed. It took the oral surgeon some careful examination of the MRI to see that the opaque piece of cement had dislodged. Perhaps this could be your problem. Good luck. Encourage your OS to really look closely at the MRI for subtle differences.

Pain from implant crown NEW

Hello All,
I seem to be having the same issue. I received 2 implants on my upper right side. I believe it is 4 & 6. Well once I got my crowns put after a few days I begin to have pain in the area. It would sense for the gums to be a bit achy and sore considering there was no tooth there for quite some time. I found this website apparently that may be able to help. Www.prosthodontics.org. Also I plan to go back to my oral surgeon in a few days to ask his opinion. Meanwhile I would like to hear you all opinions.

Thanks

Pain 3 days after crown was put on NEW

Had implant Surgery in Nov. All went fine. No Pain. Had the crown put on 10 days age in April. 3 days after I felt gum soreness. It was slight as first and continued to get worse. When I flossed the gums were very sore. When to dentist he saw nothing wrong. Gave me antibotic and mouth wash. 4 days later worse. A ache burning pinching feeling in gums around crown and below crown. Going to dentist tomorrow to have crown removed. Did anyone ever experience anything like this? Did the pain ever go away? Love to hear from anyone who has any similar experience.

Crown was put on implant upper tooth #5 on March 12. Aching throbbing pain started in a couple days. There was very sharp pain when the crown was installed on the stem and a gap on the back side of the crown. Gums are very tender to the touch in that spot. Throbbing pain has persisted through April 22. Went back to implant Dr. and he found no issues. Dr. who installed crown found no issues yet pain persisted. Having crown removed 4-23 to see if pain stops. Has anyone had an implant crown removed and then successfully replaced.

Along with back implants I have 3 front implants which replaced apiciosectomied root filled incisors. For 2 years they were fine but now I have a gripping soreness and the implants bizarrely feel live eg sensitive to hot drinks or cold wind and to move my lips or smile. Xrays show nothing. I have tried an occusal splint. I have tried nerve drugs.
I am desperate for a diagnosis as no specialist seems to help.
The only option seems to be removal of implants but I am warned I may be much, much worse if I do this.
I have read of galvanic currents from titanium implants. Any experience? I wonder about crown replacement. Any views?
Help welcomed!!

Your symptoms of being sensitive to hot or cold food/drink and wind on your face sounds like a neuropahy... Trigemnial Nueralgia is usually the culprit. I have atypical Trigemnial Neuralgia which is like tooth pain. I've been treated with the anti-seizure drugs and Gamma Knife procedure. Then I need to have four implants in upper front and when the crowns were out on I suffered 11 months thinking it would stop, but it didn't. I kept telling the prosdontist and oral surgueon I felt I was going to have a problem, but they kept saying everything looks good on Xrays. I guess they wanted to make money, as they should have suggested a less invasive procedure first. for almost a years, today I'm still without my permnament crowns and there is no solution in sight. But It seems to be a nerve in my face.

aching front tooth implant NEW
by: cheryl

I have had a front tooth implant for 17 years, it has been chipped for about 5 years, it ached once in awhile, now it aches more, like it is being pushed, by other teeth, I have tmj, also tooth next to it has a filling it leans on, how can a crown hurt when it is not real? Can I get it temporarily shut, and taken out to see what my other teeth are doing. I am 57 years old?
