Pain from implant crown

by lundy

I had an implant installed about a year ago, replacing a top front tooth. After a week or two, I had no pain and felt fine.

But then when I had the crown put on a few months ago, I started having slight pain and pressure, and occasional bleeding. My dentist didn't see anything wrong on the x-ray. He told me to floss deeper, using a wide tape-type floss. But it's not really helping.

I recently chewed something tough which pressed only on that tooth, and it made the pain and pressure slightly worse.

Any idea what the problem is, and how to fix it?

Pain

Hi Lundy,

Because there is not an actually, anatomical "tooth" there, the pain you are feeling is probably from the gums around the crown. I suspect that the gums are still getting used to the crown being on the implant, and are having some slight irritation due to that as well as food/debris/plaque being under the crown. I would also recommend flossing around the crown at least once a day, sliding the floss against the crown under as far as it reaches, as your dentist has advised. A warm salt-water rinse can also help with any inflammation, and rinses such as Listerine can help when there is mild gingivitis.

If the condition continues past 2 weeks see your dentist.

Loose crown causing pain?
by: Lundy

Hi Sharon,

As I said in my original post, I've been flossing carefully every day for several months, and the pain hasn't gone away.

My recent experience with the more severe pain when I chewed something hard with that tooth makes me think something is loose - either the crown is loose on the abutment, or the abutment is loose on the implant. So when I chew something, the crown presses into the gum and causes pain.

Does that make sense?

My dentist is at a loss since the X-rays show no issues, so I'd appreciate anyone's opinion for what problems to look for.

I have been experiencing the same thing! Did your pain ever go away with time? My situation is exactly the same as yours and my dentist did an x-ray too and nothing was found, I think he is at a lose...
