The treatment depends on the severity of your "break" in the tooth. If it is just a small sliver of tooth, then most likely your dentist will leave it alone. If it is a moderate sized break around an existing filing, your dentist will replace the filling and check to make sure that it has not effected the nerve. If it is a large break that has not effected the nerve, then the treatment would be a crown. If the break extends to the nerve of the tooth (this can ONLY be determined through a dental x-ray) then you will need to have a root canal and crown. If you delay treatment, the tooth may have to be extracted.
