Second Molar Implants

by Carol
(Scottsbluff, NE)

My dentist does not recommend second molar implants. I really do not want a hole in my mouth. Can I find reputable professionals who have experience in second molar implants?
Thank you!

2nd Molar Implants

2nd Molar Implants - why not?
While the case for every individual is unique, and circumstances may vary, overall, there should be NO reason not to have an implant placed for the 2nd molar. I recommend you seek a good oral surgeon for a consultation. You should not have to walk around with a 'hole in your mouth' if there are options out there.

Best of luck.

2'nd Molar Implants

There is absolutely - no reason why 2nd molar implants are not advisable . If there is no opposing 2nd molar and the patient is not willing to replace it - then it can be avoided.

2nd molar implants

Well, actually, the bone in the maxillary 2nd molar region isn't always the best, there is often only a small thickness of cortical bone, and mostly trabecular bone present. This CAN impact on the stability and long term prognosis for an implant.

Also most masticatory function occurs forwards of the 2nd molar (unless you have a full dental arch with the 3rd molars erupted as well). So the question here is, WHICH 2nd molar are you planning to replace AND what is the jaw/teeth relationship (the way they bite together).

Missing second molar
by: Anonymous

I was getting a severe pain on the left side of my head. The dentist found that a filling had fallen out of my second molar and that I needed a root canal. He said the tooth was cracked. He gave it a 50/50 chance of success.

I read about problems with root canals and opted to have the tooth extracted. The dentist tried to talk me out of having the extraction and explained about the tooth above the missing molar later having problems and perhaps having other teeth moving.

I recently was thinking about these potential problems and thought about getting an implant. I went to see an implant specialist and he too told me that since all my other teeth are in good shape don't do it. The upper tooth might have to come out but that would probably not be for over 20 years.

I am 58 - so I am OK with that. He said my teeth will not shift positions with only missing the one tooth. He also said that there are some risks involved with implants so why take a chance.
I am having no problems eating.

I am confused

I may need a second upper molar extracted. I will know soon. But, from reading here, I cannot tell if an implant is worth pursuing. I don't want to lose a tooth and then not replace it. And how long before the bottom tooth falls out with no opposing pressure?

Thanks!
