Implants vs dentures

Removable dentures, implant-retained dentures, or fixed teeth on implants — three ways to replace many missing teeth, with very different comfort, cost and bone outcomes.

The three options

"Implants versus dentures" is really a choice between three things: a conventional removable denture, an implant-retained (snap-in) denture, and a fixed bridge on implants such as All-on-4. Understanding the middle option is the key to making a good decision, because it combines affordability with much of the security of fixed teeth.

Conventional dentures

A traditional denture is a removable plate of false teeth that rests on the gums, held by suction and sometimes adhesive. It is the cheapest and quickest way to replace many teeth and requires no surgery. The downsides are well known: movement when eating or laughing, a bulky plate over the palate that dulls taste, sore spots, and — crucially — continued bone loss because nothing stimulates the jaw. As the bone shrinks, the denture loosens and needs relining or remaking.

Implant-retained dentures (overdentures)

Here, two to four implants are placed and the denture clips onto them with studs or a bar. The denture no longer relies on suction — it locks into place, so it does not wobble or fall, yet you can still take it out to clean. This dramatically improves comfort and confidence while keeping the cost well below a full fixed bridge. For many lower-jaw denture wearers struggling with movement, just two implants transform daily life.

Fixed implant bridges

The premium solution is a fixed full arch on implants — All-on-4 or All-on-6. These teeth are screwed onto the implants and never come out; you care for them like natural teeth. They offer the strongest bite, the most natural feel, and the best bone preservation, at the highest cost. For patients who want to forget they ever lost their teeth, this is the closest result.

Choosing

If budget is the deciding factor and surgery is not an option, a conventional denture replaces teeth affordably. If you have a denture that moves and undermines your confidence, an implant-retained overdenture is often the single best-value upgrade in dentistry. If you want fixed teeth that you never remove, a full-arch bridge is the goal. A clinic such as Taki Dent can plan any of the three and convert an existing denture onto implants.
